Book review on "Scenes and Stories"

Natasha Christia

The central theme of the first monograph of Hiro Matsuoka (*1968) is a theatrical depiction of everyday life. The black and white photographs of the Japanese artist are snapshots, yet evoke associations of novels and plays, although they were neither staged nor digitally manipulated.

In "Scenes and Stories", Matsuoka's images are carefully composed through the choice of perspective under the given light conditions. The play with unfocused views and reflections contribute to create a specific atmosphere of the images and characterizes the photographer's unique style.
